Super fast internet on the horizon?

Remember when you came over your friends house just to download some music and….data because they had a broadband connection and you didn’t want to wait around using your 56kbps modem? Well soon enough, current broadband speeds will feel just like that dial-up modem you dreaded for so long.

Scientists at the University of Sydney have demonstrated (by accident?) a theory that can speed up our internet speed up to 60 times faster. Here’s what PopSci reports about the astounding discovery:

“Information from the Web can already travel at the speed of light across optic fibers. But because outdated electronics process this data, it’s all for naught. The Australian scientists took advantage of speedy optic fibers by creating a thumbnail-sized photonic integrated circuit, which can rapidly process data—to the point that it can change the path of information one million times in a second. At an initial demonstration, the scientists showed that the chip generates an Internet 60 times faster than it is today.”

Bale asks for privacy in assault allegations

Batman star Christian Bale asked for privacy Thursday in his first comments since allegations he assaulted his mother and sister at a London hotel, saying the incident was a “deeply personal matter.”

The Welsh-born actor brushed off questions about the alleged family dispute, saying he preferred to focus on the blockbuster movie “The Dark Knight” which opened in Spain on Wednesday.

“It’s a deeply personal matter,” Bale told a press conference at a luxury hotel in this northern Spanish city. “I would ask you to respect my privacy in the matter. The 34-year-old actor spent four hours talking to British police Tuesday following allegations he assaulted his mother and one of his three sisters in his suite at London’s Dorchester Hotel two days earlier. He was released on bail, but not charged.

Bale has said through his lawyers that the assault allegations were false.

British media reported that Bale’s mother and sister told police he assaulted them at the hotel a day before attending the European premiere of “The Dark Knight.” The Sun newspaper said the complaint was filed by sister Sharon Bale and mother Jenny Bale.

The drama unfolded even as the movie broke records and was met with critical acclaim. It set a box-office record with $158.4 million during its opening weekend in the U.S. last week, and is expected to do well in Europe.

The film, which stars Bale as Batman and the late Heath Ledger as the superhero’s nemesis The Joker, opened in Barcelona at a glittery premiere Wednesday night. Thousands of fans lined the red carpet for a peek at the stars.

The movie is expected to do well in Spain thanks in part to the publicity that Bale’s reported arrest and Ledger’s untimely death in January had spawned, press reports said.

Bale first made a splash as the child star of Steven Spielberg’s “Empire of the Sun” in 1987. His screen credits also include “American Psycho,” “The Machinist” and “Batman Begins.”

Urlacher agrees to one-year contract extension

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Middle linebacker Brian Urlacher has agreed to a one-year contract extension with the Bears through the 2012 season. The six-time Pro Bowler is expected to sign the deal Tuesday after reporting to training camp.

Urlacher led the Bears with 158 tackles and a career-high five interceptions while starting all 16 games last season.

Bears superstar Brian Urlacher has agreed to a one-year contract extension through the 2012 season.

In the last five games, he registered 52 tackles, two sacks, four interceptions and one fumble recovery. The 2000 first-round pick returned one of those picks 85 yards for a score—the first interception return TD of his career—in a Week 16 rout of the Packers.

Urlacher underwent neck surgery shortly after the end of the season, but showed no lingering effects while participating in the Bears’ mandatory minicamp May 30-June 1. At the time, he insisted that he was 100 percent after completing six weeks of rehabilitation in Arizona.

Bears coach Lovie Smith concurred, describing the 30-year-old as “fine. He’s healthy, 100 percent, ready to go. We are expecting him to have the best year he’s had so far, and that’s saying a lot.”

Urlacher became just the fourth Bears linebacker to have at least five interceptions in a season and the first to lead the team outright in the category since Ross Brupbacher had seven in 1976.

In a Week 15 loss at Minnesota, Urlacher had two sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery. It was the first game in which he had a sack, interception and fumble recovery since a 2001 win in Atlanta.

Urlacher now has 37½ career sacks, surpassing Otis Wilson (36½) for the most by a Bears linebacker.

With five interceptions and two fumble recoveries in 2007, Urlacher combined to produce seven takeaways, the most in a single season in his career. His seven takeaways led to 27 of the 64 points the Bears scored off turnovers last season.

With five sacks, Urlacher became the third Bears player to register at least five interceptions and five sacks in the same season. Safety Dave Duerson (7 sacks and 6 interceptions) and linebacker Wilber Marshall (5½ sacks and 5 interceptions) both accomplished the feat in 1986.

With three interceptions in 2006, Urlacher has eight in the past two seasons, the most by an NFL linebacker. The Redskins’ London Fletcher is second with seven. Urlacher has 15 career interceptions, which ties him for fifth among linebackers since he entered the league.

Urlacher is the eighth Bears veteran to agree to a new contract this offseason before reaching the open market. He follows Alex Brown, Desmond Clark, Rashied Davis, Robbie Gould, Tommie Harris, Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton.

LONDON – Christian Bale has denied allegations of assault made by his mother and sister, hours after he was arrested, questioned by London police and released.

The 34-year-old star of “The Dark Knight” spent four hours at a police station, but was not charged. British media had reported that Bale’s mother and sister complained he had assaulted them at the Dorchester Hotel in London on Sunday night.

Representatives for Bale released a statement today denying that an assault took place.

A woman thought to be Bale’s sister Sharon told reporters “it’s a family matter” from her home in Corfe Mullen, 110 miles southwest of London. A man who answered the door at the home of his mother Jenny Bale in nearby Bournemouth said she did not want to comment.

Star of “The Dark Knight” Arrested

LONDON – Batman star Christian Bale was arrested Tuesday over allegations of assaulting his mother and sister, police and British media said.

The 34-year-old actor spent four hours at a London police station before being released on bail.

British media had reported that Bale’s mother and sister complained he had assaulted them at the Dorchester Hotel in London on Sunday night, a day before the European premiere of his latest film, “The Dark Knight.”

The Sun newspaper said police did not question the actor Monday because they did not want to interfere with the premiere of the movie.

Asked Tuesday whether Bale had been arrested, a London police spokesman did not refer to him by name but said: “A 34-year-old man attended a central London police station this morning by appointment and was arrested in connection with an allegation of assault.”

The spokesman spoke on condition of anonymity because force policy did not authorize him to be identified. British police do not name suspects before they are formally charged.

The force later said in a statement that the man had been released on bail pending further inquiries and told to return on an unspecified date in September.

U.S.-based representatives for Bale didn’t immediately return messages seeking comment. Repeated phone calls to Bale’s London representative went unanswered.

Wales-born Bale first made a splash as the child star of Steven Spielberg’s “Empire of the Sun” in 1987. His screen credits also include “American Psycho,” “The Machinist” and “Batman Begins.”

In “The Dark Knight,” Bale reprises the role of wealthy playboy Bruce Wayne and his crime-fighting alter-ego Batman, a brooding vigilante superhero still scarred by the murder of his parents.

The Warner Bros. film, which stars the late Heath Ledger as Batman’s nemesis The Joker, took in a record $158.4 million at the box office in its opening weekend in the U.S. last week.

Dark Knight Sets Opening Weekend Box Office Record

Yes it played on about 200 more screens than Spider-Man 3 did on its opening weekend, but at the end of the day the record books show that The Dark Knight is now the all time opening weekend box office record holder. Spider-Man 3 was the record holder at about $151 million, and now The Dark Knight has surpassed that number with a take of $155 million.

Looks like most people who predicted that Dark Knight would just inch out the record were spot on. It’s nice to see… you know… an actual GOOD movie at the top of the Box Office record books (at least for opening weekend).
