LG Reveals The World's Thinnest LCD TV

There’s an article in today’s New York Times about upcoming super-thin laptops in which reporter Ashlee Vance uses the phrase, “is-it-even-here thin.” Aside from being a hilarious unit of measurement, it also happens to be perfectly suited for this post about LG’s new LCD TV models.

DisplayBlog reports that LG’s new 42-inch and 47-inch LCD TVs are in fact the thinnest in the world, coming in at a miniscule 0.23 inches .

According to LG’s press release, the key to the display’s ridiculous thinness lies in the company’s Light Guide Sheet (LGS) technology, which apparently cuts the thickness in half when used in place of the more commonly found light guide plates. Also, the displays use edge-lit LED backlight system instead of Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps (CCFL) to make the screens even slimmer. This combination results in displays that are not only super-thin, but also weigh about half as much as typical LCD TVs.

No word yet on pricing or availability, but given the record-setting stature of the TVs, I’m sure that info won’t remain a secret for long.
